The theme of the Conference is Sustainability of Public Health. Sustainability is an issue that has risen to the forefront of our community and professional conversations. It's on the front pages of the news and in political speeches. People, organizations and events are "going green" for the environment. Workforce development and succession planning is a critical issue not just for public health, but for many professions. Organizations and programs are expected to plan for and assure their own sustainability, even in the face of dwindling financial support. Assuring the current and future health of ALL people in our communities has drawn increased attention to the importance of addressing health disparities and environmental factors. Technology continues to play an important and growing role in the successful delivery of the essential public health services. A great deal of emphasis is placed on public health advocacy and policy as a means to build or revise the infrastructure that will sustain the profession and the health of communities well into the future. And, public health professionals and agencies are continuing to expand their partnerships with other professions and fields, as the cross-disciplinary linkages to health continue to be recognized. The issues of public health and sustainability are intricately intertwined and connected on a myriad of levels. The Public Health in the Rockies 2008 Conference is committed to exploring and highlighting this connection, and stimulating the dialogue and ideas that will empower the sustainability and future of public health for years to come.
